The first time we heard this CD in the office all work stopped. And it did not start again until the last notes had faded away. We were all captured by it. We'll try to describe it here, but know that the description will fail to do it justice. Just order it and see for yourself.
In the mid-nineteenth century Henry David Thoreau made three trips to the wilderness of Maine. His essays, published in a book titled THE MAINE WOODS, told of traveling up the Penobscot River to Greenville, down the West Branch of the Penobscot, and climbing Mount Katahdin. Along the way he described the people of these wilderness settlements, their work, and a way of life that established the foundations of present day Maine's economy and culture. It is a classic of nature and adventure writing.
David Mallett was born in Dover-Foxcroft and grew up exploring those same wilderness areas. In his thrity year career as a singer/songwriter he has often drawn on those experiences and created songs that carry the listener to those same places.
In this new CD -- The Fable True -- David Mallett reads 22 selections from Thoreau's THE MAINE WOODS and accompanies them with original compositions which are so perfectly matched to the narrative that it's hard to imagine hearing the spoken word without the music. This is truly a masterful work for Mallett and his reading and music breathe a new life into Thoreau's writings. As the great northern wilderness of Maine faces the possibility of unprecedented change, this CD gives an elegant look into its historic past.
